Athletics

We would like to welcome all SHJ students and parents to the SHJ Athletic Program. The program has a tradition of success both on and off the court. The program offers SHJ students (in grades 5-8) the opportunity to participate in boy's and girl's volleyball, boy's and girl's basketball, and boy's baseball. The players compete in the Catholic School Athletic League. Some teams will play in other leagues as well, which will be determined by the team coach and athletic directors. This effort requires a major commitment of volunteer time, as do most of the extracurricular activities at SHJ.

Parents and players must be committed to practice times, driving to games, helping with set-up and concession sales at home games and tournaments. We also need volunteers to be team managers, tournament directors, helpers for team photo days, and uniform distribution.

There are no fees charged to you or your child to participate. The expenses for each team, including entry fees, referee fees, and equipment are paid for through a variety of fund raising activities, including: our annual tournaments, summer basketball and volleyball camps, girl's summer basketball league, the annual "No Slam" alumni tournament, and Mayfair. None of our coaches or the athletic directors receive compensation.

The athletic program at SHJ has always been a competitive one, and has required a high degree of commitment on the part of the student, his/her parent(s) and or coach. Our philosophy has frequently resulted in championships on the courts and field, but more importantly has brought a sense of self satisfaction and accomplishment to hundreds of gifted and non-gifted athletes over the years. All of our coaches have had experience in playing and coaching.

We are fortunate to have a group that is willing to donate a great deal of its time to our children. A player's attitude, physical ability, and attendance at practice are a few of the criteria that coaches use to determine what team a player will be placed on and how much he/she will play. All players must meet academic and behavior eligibility requirements. These topics will be discussed in full with your individual coaches and team.

We look forward to a fun-filled and rewarding season for all of our teams. More information regarding team registration, season dates, parent/coach meetings will be announced. If you would like more information or have any questions about the program, please feel free to contact one of us!

Thank you,

Sacred Heart of Jesus Athletic Directors
