Curriculum - Middle School Science

6th Grade: TEXT: Science Explorer, Discoveries in Life, Earth and Physical Science, Prentice Hall

The Sixth Grade course of study follows the newly revised Science Curriculum developed by the Archdiocese of Denver. The curriculum covers: Earth Science which includes weather, space, the Earth’s surface and conservation; Life science which includes cell development, body systems, ecology; and Physical Science which includes: matter, periodic table and energy.

All of the themes of study are based on investigations through the steps of scientific inquiry. Students will use these steps to investigate the world around them. Science classes will include: lab, activities, models, visuals, and content reading and writing as well as research. All instruction in the sixth grade will be in agreement with the teachings of the Catholic Church.
7th Grade: TEXT: Science Explorer, Life Science, Prentice Hall

The Seventh Grade course of study follows the newly revised Science Curriculum developed by the Archdiocese of Denver. The curriculum covers the life sciences which include the following: Characteristics of organisms from single-celled life to complex animals and plants; cell structure and function; heredity and genetics; human anatomy- covering all human body systems; and ecology.

All of the themes of study are based on investigations through the steps of scientific inquiry. Students utilize the tools of science to study life on our planet. Incorporated into the curriculum are the official Catholic Church teachings that relate directly to ethical standards in science such as abortion, evolution, animal research, etc. Science classes will include: labs, activities, models, visuals, and content reading and writing as will as research.
8th Grade: TEXT: Science Explorer, (Five themed texts): Earth’s Waters, Inside Earth, Earth’s Changing Surface, Chemical Interactions, and Chemical Building Blocks.

The eighth grade course of study follows the newly revised Science Curriculum developed by the Archdiocese of Denver. The curriculum covers both physical and earth sciences including the following topics: a study of matter which covers the physical and chemical properties of matter, periodic table, compounds and mixtures, chemical reactions and equations, and acids and bases; a study of the Earth’s surface which covers minerals, rocks, water, atmosphere and land forms, surface changes, internal changes, earth’s resources, and some astronomy.

All of the themes of study are based on investigations through the steps of scientific inquiry. Students will use these steps to investigate the world around them. Incorporated into the curriculum are the official Catholic Church teachings that relate directly to ethical standards in science including equitable uses of resources and faith-based teachings, Science classes will include: labs, activities, models, visuals, and content reading and writing as well as research.
