| 6th Grade Library and Reference Skills: |
Sixth graders meet weekly with the librarian for lessons on reference skills and efficient use of the library. Learning to use various reference tolls (dictionary/thesaurus, encyclopedia , atlas, almanac, and the Reader’s Guide to Periodical Literature), students become familiar with both the hard copy and the online format of doing research. A review on the important parts of a book (title page, table of contents, text, glossary, index, bibliography, and appendix) is also included in the curriculum.
One-on-one assistance in doing research for various class assignments is available to students, by request. Of course, students are also encouraged to use the SHJ school libraries to browse for their recreational reading as well as for book report assignments. |
