Curriculum - 5th Grade

Religion: TEXT: Faith First, Benzinger

The religion course will be an in-depth presentation of the Creed and the Sacraments, what it means to be a Catholic Christian, The Bible, and prayer.

Reading: TEXT: SRA Open Court Level 5

The Literature Experience Series is based on the use of rich, interactive, and successful experiences with excellent literature. It stresses a wide variety of reading and writing experience. We will be doing cooperative reading as well as individual and teacher guided reading and writing.

English /
Language Arts:
TEXT: Voyages in English, Loyola University Press

This course strives to help students master the essential skills in writing, grammar usage, clear thinking, speaking and listening, and vocabulary development. The course teaches students how writing depends upon clear thinking. It also teaches them to write well using a variety of approaches. Students will write stories, poems, letters, etc. to become more competent writers.

Mathematics: TEXT: Houghton Mifflin Mathematics

The course will involve a review of all basic facts in addition, subtraction, multiplication, division; multiplication by two- and three-digit numbers; division by one- and two-digit divisors; fractions (addition, subtraction, division); measurement (metric and customary units). Geometry (including use of a protractor) and graphing are also taught. An emphasis will be placed on problem solving.

Spelling: TEXT: Everyday Spelling, Scott Foresman-Addison Wesley

One unit of spelling words will be covered each week. A test for mastery will be given each week.

Science: TEXT: MacMillan/McGraw Hill

Social Studies: TEXT: World Studies – Foundations of Geography; World Studies – The Ancient World

This course covers: The 5 themes of geography, map skills, pre-history, the Fertile Crescent, Ancient Egypt, Greece, and Rome.

Computer: The students have one hour per week in the computer lab. There is a continuation of skills building using Microsoft word-processing, Print Shop and a variety of software to enhance skill building in academic areas.
Music: Music study consists of experiencing and applying knowledge of the musical elements, rhythm, melody, harmony, form, texture, and style, through the use of one or more activities such as singing, moving, playing instruments, creating and listening. Music is offered twice a week.
Art: Catholic values and themes are taught in our Art classes. The areas of concentration are: Art History; Understanding and using basic drawing skills - contour drawing, gesture drawing, positive and negative space, shading, perspective; Painting - using color effectively, experimenting with different styles of painting; Exploring sculpture through a variety of media; Developing individual style; Understanding and appreciating other cultures through art. Art is offered once a week.
Physical Education: The emphasis is on physical fitness and developmental activities. This class consists of: Fitness routines and activities (Fitness testing); Fundamental skills; Rhythmic activities; stunts and tumbling; Low organization games and relays; and Sport skills and related games. Physical Education is offered twice a week.
Family Life: This course will help young people develop the healthy attitudes and values of Catholic family life. The five basic themes are: Family Living, Personal Growth and Self-Understanding, Respect for Life, Catholic Christian Sexuality and Social Living.
